Middle Peninsula Priority Conservation Sites Project |
|
| The Priority Conservation Sites Project identifies and protectes critically important natural resources by working with landowners and local governments within the watersheds of the Middle Peninsula. We will target our conservation efforts on waterfront properties of 100 or more acres - properties that offer the greatest opportunity and leverage for preserving wildlife and fisheries habitat and water quality on the Chesapeake Bay. |
| |
| The project was designed to accomplish multiple conservation goals through outreach to the owners of priority sites and to their local governments. We worked closely with the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission (MPPDC) Environmental Program to complete the first regional survey of ownership, land uses, zoning policies and natural resources on these large blocks of waterfront property. |
| |
| Through easements and other strategies, we will provide critical habitat protection within the watershed, including the fresh and saltwater tidal wetlands that act as a nursery for marine species. We will promote sound land use planning in order to retain the sustainable farm, forest and recreational uses of priority sites and to prevent incompatible development that can produce non-point source water pollution. Finally, the project enhances private stewardship as well as community action, through strengthened regional partnerships among citizen-led entities and local governments. |
